Christmas Eve 2024 Special: Chi: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite (Orb: On the Movements of the Earth)

Christmas Eve, and I have spent a sizeable chunk of it indulging in a theological/philosophical wet dream via “Orb: Movements of the Earth”, and deeply poignant saga about… hmmm, that can be difficult to pinpoint, despite the obviousness that it is about how the West eventually came to disprove geocentricism, and embrace heliocentricism.

Basic plot, some spoilers: People used to believe that the Sun, and everything else in the universe, revolved around the Earth, so what happens when people start questioning otherwise? Label them as heretic to protect the foundations of a stable, peaceful society; all for the Greater Good. However, ideas are immortal, or something along those lines as said by one Ben Sisko, which leads to a select few scholars to propose something that fits better, which is what we all know these days: the Earth revolves around the Sun. Technically, we are a 2 Sun system (making a politicaljoke here), but Alpha Centuri is not within the scope of this manga, and you all know by now that I am an intellectual with forbidden knowledge.

We get inquisitors doing their jobs in maintaining the status quo. [Tame] Torture porn for anyone who is into that.

We have a delicious medley of how faith, reason, logic, intuition, and similar Human Conditionals motivate us, for better or for worse. Intellectually erotic, for people who are into that, myself included.

Above all, we have an intricately interwoven narrative full of seemingly random encounters that accurately display how tenuously information is passed along to the next generation.

Be warned, this manga can be a bit disjointed if you are after a singular Protagonist, story arc, etc… but that only serves to highlight my last point about how much of a role “providence” plays in everyday life.

There’s an anime now!

I daresay that I needed this, at this time, so no doubt there is a certain Shinzol at play here.
