Angel of the Golden Aura (Manga by Ao Hirano. Eventually an Anime might come to be…)

Behold this scene.

I started watching recaps a few years ago, because they give you a taste of the story, and despite most of them using A.I. to narrate, I find them passably addictive. I STILL REMEMBER YOU ‘DANIELCC’ ON YOUTUBE! YOU WERE ONE OF THE FIRST TO DO IT WELL…

Anyway, I was recommended “Angel of the Golden Aura”, and wow, did it hit all the right points for a hopeless romantic like myself.

Quick Recap of the 50 or so chapters; SPOILERS!!!!

Okay, ready?

Our heroine Reijuu Belby is living in deplorable conditions in the basement of her noble family’s estate. She is a pariah because in the reality of their world, some humans gained auras/magic power due to the Godess of Creation, who has a golden aura that eventually resulted in human gaining Green/Blue/Red/Yellow and in rare cases, Black auras. Nobles are descended from those humans; in some case, powerful auras can become Transcendant, which means they can manifest and be wielded like an extension of the person. But despite hailing from a noble family, Reijuu is colourless, thus basically a commoner. Worse, she is viewed as the reason her mother died, as the latter went out to buy her a gift, but was killed in an accident. Thus these two stigmas cause her father and sister, as well as the entire estate, to treat her as an outcast. Reiju is barely fed, not nurtured or educated, beaten heartbreakingly (often on contrivances of her two-faced younger sister), and is left hopeless. One day, after a particularly vicious beating, she tried to escape but is caught by her father, and falsely maligned by her sister. At her lowest point, Reijuu falls asleep, but to her shock, she has now unlocked astral projection and awakens a golden aura that can instantly heal all wounds, afflictions, and health conditions. Being kind, she heals everyone she meets in spirit form, and though they can perceive a golden aura dueing that helping Moment, she is otherwise invisible and unable to interact with people. The legend of a merciful angel, herald of the Goddess, begins to spread throughout the lands. Reijuu can only use her power in spirit form, however.

However, one day, when spirit travelling, she enters the palace grounds, and find the first prince with grievous wounds. He has a rare black aura, but has bot managed to manifest Transcendant status, thus is seen as a failure to his father, the Emperor. As a result, his step mother, the Empress, takes advantage of the Emperor’s indifference to isolate and abuse the prince- in stark contrast, her son, the second prince, is actually very fond of his big brother. Reijuu heals him, and is shocked that he can hear her, as well as notice her general direction- it is revealed that black auras absorb all other magic, thus he is innately able to sense her when she is nearby. Despite awkwardness and his initial coldness, they develop an unspoken bond as she tried to ease his suffering. However, one day the second prince is severely poisoned, and the first prince is suspected as the primary culprit, so he is almost killed by a devoted conspirator of the Empress- during this critical moment, Reijuu is attacked in spirit form by the powerful devotee, whose Transcendant properties allow him to somewhat harm her spirit form. This was the trigger for The 1st Prince to unleash his true potential, and transcend, which drastically changes his father’s perceptions: the devotee fails his assassination attempt and is discarded by the Empress, ironically being forced to commit suicide (a combination of her cleaning up her mess, punishing the devotee, and his psyche breaking when realising the Empress only viewed him as a disposable tool). Reijuu is happy for the 1st Prince, and helped heal the second, but her low self esteem causes her to think that he is better off without association with her: he has asked for her name, but she refuses to divulge her identity, and is terrified that he will treat her differently if discovering she is colourless in human form.

3 years pass, and the 1st Prince, in a ‘Cinderella’ fashion, attempts to find her, deducing that she must be a noble around his age, and mandates that every noble family must have their daughters attend a royal Ball, in hopes of meeting his “Angel” once more…

I could tell you more, but if you’ve read this far, then you will probably enjoy the story better with pretty anime pictures. Note: Try to find a website without so much pornographic advertising, as I was too engrossed by the story to navigate back to googling another site to read it.

If you remember “A little Princess” by Frances Hodgeson Burnett’s (?) then you will definitely find this one to be a spiritual successor of sorts, albeit one for a shojo romance audience!
